There are some borders that foreigners aren't supposed to visit. The tri-border between China, Russia and North Korea was a grey area: we had heard that if you weren't Chinese, you couldn't go. But we also heard that it might be possible.

It was hard to be optimistic. We already been arrested once on the North Korean border and stopped countless times. But this was a truly interesting place. The axis where China, Russia and North Korea meet. A relic of history, where Russia denied China an access point to the sea in it's Northeast.

What goes on there? What does North Korea use the border for?

From a journey in China that began by crossing the Kyrgyzstan border into Xinjiang, this would be the last stop. Hopefully we weren't going out with a bang.
