The USA is gigantic. Most Americans aren't even aware of all the lands it controls around the world. And there's no better of example of this than American Samoa 🇦🇸.

Distant and isolated from the US mainland, American Samoa generally flies pretty low under the radar. Even Guam is more famous. If anyone has heard of it at all, it might be for the strangely large number of players it sends to the NFL. If you look at economic stats, supposedly it has the highest poverty levels in the US.

But what was this place really like? With a population that doesn't even reach 50k, and that is dropping by 1k every year, it seemed like time was running out to go visit. It's not easy to go there. You either catch a once a week flight from Hawaii, or you take a tiny 5 person Talofa Airways plane from neighboring Samoa (the independent country). I opted for the latter, and I'm glad I did.
