Description

KURASHIKI, JAPAN: Most of historic Japan has sadly vanished. Seeing that historically everything was built using wood if did not stand the test of time and global conflicts. There are pockets of ancient Japan still in existence though.

One such town is Kurashiki, located about 20 minutes south of Okayama by metro. The houses still standing in the historic downtown area here are up to 300 years old dating all the way back to the Edo period. Many of these houses have today been turned into shops, restaurants and handicraft outlets.

Tucked neatly around an ancient hilltop Shinto temple this is by far the most picturesque and authentic town I have visited in Japan. Naturally this called for a walk about town to converse with the locals and investigate what was for sale in the local shops.
